Biological Clock
Internal chronometer, located in the midline of the brain above the optic nerve. The biological clock is responsible for regulating body temperature, releasing hormones, and controlling the metabolic rate. Its timekeeping is based on tracking the movement and interaction of molecules. It is also the primary regulator of sleep and wakefulness. The biological clock is what keeps us awake.

Archetypes
Also known as “archaic remnant.” Carl Jung believed that the human mind has a tendency to form representations of mythological motifs that cannot be explained by anything in an individual’s life. Archetypes would be innate and inherited patterns of the human mind. Bulkeley calls them “universal psychic images” (34). Common archetypes can be found across cultures and across time, in art, literature, myth, and religion: the wise old man/father, the hero, the mother, the crone, the child. Archetypes would be the bedrock upon which dreams arise.

Activation-synthesis hypothesis
J. Allan Hobson’s hypothesis that REM sleep is caused by involuntary neurological processes. Dreams are simply the mind’s attempt to make sense of randomly generated signals.
